StuffMart…Free Couch Giveaway!

Standard
Have you ever seen the Veggie Tale of Madame Blueberry? If not, I highly recommend it, even as a 22-year-old. This lesson is not just for kids, folks!
Before our IKEA trip, we made sure to check out this highly recommended consignment shop (“shop” is understatement, “warehouse” may be more appropriate) called Stuff, Etc. Let me just say, it was amazing. There was so much…stuff.
The entire basement was devoted to furniture, where we found a beautiful wingback chair for a great price and we also found two, completely different loveseats. We liked them both, and they were both only $50 each. We considered just getting one, but well, we got caught up in the moment. An impulse buy.
I’ve lived in this blessed country all my life, and I’m not immune to the defects we Americans have. We are a people who cannot live without instant gratification.
After spending $50 on a loveseat we’re not even going to use, it made me consider how many times I use the following line, “Oh, and this was just an impulse buy.” How much of our money is wasted on things I think I need in that one tiny window of emotional attachment? I don’t even want to know.
And how fortunate am I that I have money in my bank account to afford such impulse buys, especially compared to rest of the world?
We are certainly blessed, and honestly, we tend to be on the conservative side when it comes to our finances. But we can easily convince ourselves that we need much more than we do.
That said, does anyone want a free couch?

Back to Blogging!

Standard

Consider this blog my comeback blog.

I love blogging, I really do! I know it hasn’t seemed like it, as I’ve taken a little leave of absence for the past month. But really, truly, I’m back for good.
And if it gives you any comfort, nothing really exciting even happened in June. So there’s not much to catch you up on. We basically spent the whole month packing, packing and packing. There is one downside to loving organization (as I do) and having slight OCD (as I have): I’m usually alone in my organizational endeavors, namely packing.
I did most of the packing myself, that is correct.
Don’t get me wrong, Bryan tried to help, he begged me to help, and when I was exhausted enough to give in, I finally let him help. He’s so patient with his crazy wife.
Anyway, we said our goodbyes to many of our friends, I got to hang out with all of the fun high schoolers I know one last time. We had our last “Family Fun Night” with my family. We played Killer Bunnies with our Connection Group Homies. And we drove to Iowa City for good on Wednesday, June 30th.
We welcomed our first guest to our home on Thursday, July 1st. Our house was still completely in ruins, but Sara didn’t mind at all-she even helped us unpack.
Oh yeah, I also did most of the unpacking myself-why can’t I give up control?! : )
We went to IKEA on Sunday, July 4th, and got the furniture of my dreams. Seriously, I love everything we purchased. And I loved the prices even more. Who doesn’t love IKEA?
On Monday, we set almost everything up, and it took THE WHOLE DAY. I did not expect all of that build-it-yourself furniture would take so long to build-it-ourselves! Maybe we’re just extremely pathetic. That, or we got too many things at IKEA.
This post is already getting long. So I’ll leave you in suspense for the following posts:
  • Our trip to IKEA, and what we would do for the perfect couch.
  • Our new favorite store in Iowa City, and a Veggietale Lesson
  • I feel light-headed, is that gas I smell?
  • Termites! Oh wait, that’s just an Ant eating through the wood in our cupboard. What?!

Anniversary Weekend: The Real Deal

Standard

On our actual anniversary weekend, the weekend of May 23rd, we had a TON of fun as well. As I mentioned, Bryan had to “lay down his tracks” for the next Anthem CD. He went up on Friday night and got back around 4pm on Saturday.

I took advantage of this time to clean everything and make pita bread. Can I just say, that this pita bread is the best I’ve EVER eaten? I was SO PROUD of myself that I ate two whole pitas fresh out of the oven! DELICIOUS!

When Bryan got back from Minneapolis, we left for Iowa City almost immediately and arrived by 7pm. The Robinsons (our future Trailer Park buddies) were awesome enough to put us up for the night. We met up with my little brother and his girlfriend and we all went out on the town for the evening.

On Sunday we went to Parkview Church, which was fun because after we plant our church, we won’t really be trying out churches in Iowa City, you know? Then we grilled out:
and hiked:
and watched LOST for the next…9 hours. Yep. That’s what we did on May 23rd, watched LOST for 9 hours. We wouldn’t have had it any other way!

The highlight of my weekend was actually Monday, though. We called our workplaces and told we weren’t going to able to make it. We really did need to figure out the problem with our mail key [our mail keys didn’t work for some reason], and thankfully we were able to do that. But we also got to hang out with the Robinsons for an EXTRA day! We played the Farming Game with them for around 6 hours. They, of course, loved it. We ALSO found out that that the BOWLING ALLEY/MINI GOLF (you read that right, bowling and mini golf in one?! YES) which is located RIGHT NEXT to our Trailer Park is AWESOME!!! It’s only $2.75 for mini golf, $4.75 for bowling and $.25 for arcade games! And me and Miranda got to ride on Chuck-E-Cheese-like RATS!!!
In other words, we are excited to live in Iowa City and our actual anniversary weekend was a major SUCCESS!

We have a mortgage…

Standard

And a mobile home.

Yep, you read correctly, we were in Iowa City last weekend, and I DID remember to bring my camera so I could show off our humble abode to you all. With no further ado, here are the pictures!

Ain’t she a beaut?

The huge front window that provides all that home-y natural light

The living room

The kitchen

The master bedroom. See that cute little stain-glass window looking into the master bathroom? We’re high-class now. (Not my favorite part of the house…)

Hey, we have a skylight! But we also have a mirrors around our bathtub which kind-of grosses me out and those curtains are sweeeeeeettttt.

But look at our awesome over-sized tub!

And our big walk-in closet!

The second half of the house, gotta love that wallpaper!

The tiny room and Bryan’s future music room

Oh yes, the second bathroom, you bet we get to keep that shower curtain.

My future office and the guest bedroom. Don’t worry, we are totally keeping those plaid curtain, who could resist those! (hopefully you’re catching my sarcasm here)

Now this is the most exciting part! A huge shed! With electric running to it! My dream for this space: DEEP. FREEZE.

Despite some decorating projects, we are incredibly blessed! Can’t wait to show you what we do with the place!

Iowa City Retreat

Standard

Bryan and I went to Iowa City this past weekend for the Iowa City church planting retreat. It was really, really good. We started Friday night with worship, fellowship and confessing (anonymously) the lies we’ve been believing. As Lance read our lies, we fought them with scripture, at least one piece of truth for every lie. What a great way to start the weekend.

After our mini service together, we broke up into groups, and went out on the town! It was fun to get out into Iowa City (friday) night life and get a taste of where we’re moving. Overall, I think everyone went to bed in awe of the craziness but also the amazing cool-ness of the city. I know I kept thinking, “I want to live here!” The Ped-Mall area is just so full of life, cool shops, and amazing food!

Troy Nesbitt spoke to us on Saturday morning, sharing with us, as a new church, things that he and Cornerstone have learned from starting a new church. This was probably my favorite part. I really want to remember ALL of these things as we transition into our new church family:

  1. JESUS (that’s what all that matters)
  2. Be known for what we are, not what we’re not
  3. Know and be known by everyone in our church (while it’s still small enough for that to possible)
  4. Welcome the outsider in. Write their names down and remember them! (There’s the word in the Bible that we translate into hospitality, it literally means “lover of strangers.” I love that!)
  5. Except big things, but focus on celebrating all things
  6. The poor matter, so do the rich
  7. Athletes and Artists are both people. People matter.
  8. Generosity begins where obedience ends and giving everything is best
  9. People mess it up, it’ll hurt
  10. Authentic is Accountability
  11. Have critical conversations (when you are most scared to do something, that should motivate you to do it)
  12. Prayer actually works, tell people why you’re praying for them
  13. We (Cornerstone) came up with the Three C’s on purpose [Celebrate, Connect, Contribute]
  14. Missional living is unnatural and always hard (but it becomes addictive)

April 6th, 2010

Standard

Two years ago, on April 6th, 2008, Bryan proposed to me next to the Princess Castle in Disney Land.

Today, April 6th, 2010, Bryan and I acquired a castle of sorts.

A MOBILE HOME to be exact!

We freakin’ bought a trailer in Iowa City!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m SOOOOO excited! Can you tell?

We’re going to have a little, beautiful, cute little home of our own! Except that it’s not so little, considering it’s TWICE the size of our current one bedroom apartment. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, one awesome shed, a huge and very pretty deck, big windows in the living room, over sized bathtub in the master bath, high-end washer and dryer and very close to a cute little fishing pond! We’ll have a REAL guest bedroom so you can come visit ANYTIME you want!

And guess how much it costs? $21 dollars LESS than what we’re paying for rent here in Ames!

I wish I had pictures for you all but you’ll have to wait until we close on the 24th of April. Until then!

F.A.F.S.A.

Shortly after Bryan officially got accepted into the University of Iowa we received more Financial Aid information from the University. We filled out and sent in what they needed right away.

It only took a few days for them to get back to us with their offer of financial aid. We, of course, qualified for a million dollars of student loans and such, but that’s not really the exciting part…

Estimated cost of Tuition and Fees for the 2010-2011 School year:
$7,417.00

UI Transfer Scholarship:

$6,128.00

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!??! Yep, God did that. I couldn’t believe it myself so I told Bryan to call the Office of Student Financial Aid to make sure it was actually free money that we just got for being awesome. They verified that it would just be credited to out U-Bill and we were all set!

Is it just me, or does God want us in Iowa City or what?!?!?

To Him be the glory! Can’t wait to see how he uses us!

2/3 of a year, that’s what eight months is.

Standard

I just want to clear the air and say that I am totally guilty of back-dating this post (among others) to match the correct anniversary date. Whatevs.

I’m deeming this past month as the month in which God has faithfully answered ALL of our prayers. Seriously, every single one. So that’s the kind-of update you’re getting today.

Prayer #1
Please please please, God, help Bryan get into Stat 226.
started 11/13/2009
answered 1/12/2010

Basically it’s a pre-requisite for EVERY business class and he couldn’t really take much (at U of I) until he had this class under his belt. However, as a transfer student, he had a late registration date, and all classes were full by the time he got things straightened out with the Admissions office. So we checked and checked and checked but no one dropped the class prematurely. So Bryan ended up just going to class on the first day and asking the Professor if he could join. By the end of the week, he was in! Yay!

Prayer #2
God, I need a job in Iowa City that will provide for us while Bryan is in school. But I want to have a ministry with women my own age. I don’t really want to work with 100% males (as I do now) or with Old ladies in a Clerical Position. Show me what you want for me.

See this post for more details!

Prayer #3
God, we know we’re going to take a pay cut by moving to Iowa City, but we still want to try to stay completely out of debt through college. Show us what you will do.

partially answered sometime after that, partially answered 1/18/2010

God has really softened my heart towards Student Loans. They’re not evil and I need to be thankful that we are out of debt now, and not be upset if we don’t get through college with no loans. After all, we’ll have very little debt even if we do have to take out a few loans. Well, not only has God provided a job for me in Iowa City, but He provide a pretty sizable tax return as well! After we receive our refund, we’ll be putting about 1/2 of this Fall’s Semester Tuition in the bank! Hooray!

Prayer #4
God, we want to say, “yes” to whatever you have for us, give us opportunities here in Ames to say “yes” to.
started 1/1/2010
answered all the time

We’ve had so many more opportunities to hang out with friends and new people and people that don’t know Christ than we’ve ever had before in our marriage! We’re busier and more actively seeking out relationships and connections so that we can invest in the people in the here and now. This is something we really hope to apply easily in Iowa City as well!

…and the job hunt ends.

Standard

Last Wednesday, I started looking for jobs in Iowa City. Yesterday, an amazing job fell into my lap. That’s the way I roll!

Last Friday, January 15th, my bosses and I were discussing possible candidates to take over my position, when Darrell said, “What if you just worked from Iowa City?”

Todd and I thought he wasn’t serious, so we moved on, but he persisted. We started talking about it, confirmed some of the details yesterday and I’m not really sure how it all happened, but I have a job!

Not only that, but I have the same job, with a few less duties, for 30 hours a week, from home.

Is this a dream come true?

No, just an answered prayer.

God is so stinking good!
